The studio

A small practice, patiently built.

Devhassy Studio was founded in 2014 by Ira P. Margulies, a former editorial stylist turned interior designer, in a converted carriage house on Fairfield Terrace in Short Hills, New Jersey.

The founder

Ira P. Margulies.

Ira grew up between Detroit and the Jersey shore, the daughter of a cabinetmaker and a fabric buyer. She spent nine years styling interiors editorially for regional magazines before opening Devhassy in 2014 with a single, stubborn belief: that the best rooms feel found, not designed.

She is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), a New Jersey Certified Home Stager (CHS), and a mother of two who still, on a good afternoon, prefers rearranging bookshelves to almost anything else.

Every project at Devhassy passes through her hands personally — from the first consultation to the last stem placed on install day.

What we believe

Four principles we hold close.

Principle 01

Rooms should sound like their owners

Not like their designer, and never like a Pinterest board. If it doesn't feel like you, we've done the job wrong.

Principle 02

Materials before moves

Honest oak, clay, wool, linen, brass. We choose materials that age gracefully, then quietly let them do the work.

Principle 03

Local, whenever possible

Sixty percent of what we source comes from within a three-hour drive of Short Hills. New Jersey and Hudson Valley makers, mostly.

Principle 04

Small, on purpose

We take a maximum of twelve projects a year. It is the only way to give each family the attention we think they deserve.

Materials

The palette we return to.

A working studio has a palette, whether it admits it or not. Ours is chalk, oat, clay, cognac, unfinished oak, hand-thrown ceramic, waxed brass and a lot of very quiet white. We reach for it not because it is fashionable — but because it holds up. In fifteen years these rooms will still look right.

Curious whether we're a fit?

We think the honest way to know is to sit in your kitchen for an hour. Reach out — we'll bring the coffee.
